Biker collides with grit lorry

A motorcyclist and her passenger who crashed into a gritting lorry were described as "incredibly lucky" by police after escaping with cuts and bruises.

The female rider was travelling towards Hastings when the accident happened at the Glyne Gap roundabout on Sunday (January 3) just before 4pm.

The lorry was spraying grit behind and to the right of its passage. As the lorry circled slowly round the roundabout the motorcycle tried to overtake, realising too late the gritting lorry was not turning off.

The motorcyclist and passenger fell off just before colliding with the lorry. The male passenger sustained a small gash to his leg. Both were admitted to the Conquest and have since been discharged.

PC Dave Catt, of Polegate's Road Policing Team, said the lorry had done nothing wrong, though his route contradicted the Highway Code. He said: "When overtaking a gritting lorry, do be careful, and always allow plenty of space. They travel at slow speeds and they may not always be in the right position.

"These two were incredibly lucky to survive."
