Bognor homeowners encouraged to shine a light on criminal activities

Homeowners around Bognor Regis have been urged to shine a light on law-breakers.

The advice has come from police officers in the town to help stop households falling victim to criminals' autumn activities.

Sergeant Craig Wilkie, of the town's police station, said: "It sounds simple advice but, when it is dark outside, people don't always think to draw their curtains or leave a light on if they are going out.

"To the opportunist burglar, it is almost an open invitation. A house that is in darkness is the easiest target as no-one is likely to be at home.

"It doesn't take long for a burglar to get inside and steal property, particularly things that are easy to sell such as televisions, videos, computers, jewellery and antiques."

He and his fellow officers across the district are keen to build on their work of recent weeks.

They arrested two suspects, who have been remanded in custody, on charges of burglary, after a recent spike of domestic break-ins in the area.

They identified and arrested the alleged offenders after sustained activity to counter the crimes.

The Sussex Police-wide initiative, Operation Twilight, has seen simple and effective crime prevention advice for the darker nights placed on its www.sussex.police.uk website.

It includes putting timer switches on radios and indoor lights and fitting security lighting.
