Another effort is now being made to re-establish a post office counter at Broad Oak Stores. A petition of names of those who support the scheme is being collected and if you can call in and add your name it would be greatly appreciated. The local MP has already pledged to help where she can. If you would like to see the service up and running again then please take the time to call in and sign.

At last week’s Village Assembly a number of local organisations were repreeented and gave details of their own particular work or past-time. The proposed 30-mph speed limit will probably be coming into force later in the year. The limit is now going to be throughout the village and not be split in two as was the original idea of the Highways Agency. A special display of the final details will be on view at the Village Hall during a meeting going to be held next month.

Tomorrow, Saturday, April 28, St. George’s Church will be holding a Spring Jumble Sale in the Church Room from 10.00 am to 3.00 pm. Brede Mothers’ Union meets on Wednesday, May 2, at 2.30 pm in St. George’s Church Room. Speaker will be Daphne Burton on ‘Women of Faith’.

Brede Cricket Club didn’t fair too well in their opening game against Sedlescombe being convincingly beaten by 109 runs. This Sunday they play another home game, against Mountfield, starting at 2.30 pm. Next week’s opponents, on Sunday, May 6, will be at Burwash.

The Brede Giants Pumping Engines are on view again next Saturday, May 5, and Bank Holiday Monday, May 7, at Brede Waterworks from 10 am to 4.00 pm. Parking is free, refreshments and souvenir items are available. New members for the Society are welcome as is anyone who likes working with heritage machinery. Another Village Dance is being held at the Village Hall on Saturday, May 5, from 7.30 pm. The programme as usual will include favourite dances from ballroom, sequence, Latin and line dincing. Entrance is £3.00.

Places are still available for the Brede & Udimore Overseas Group Spring Lunch on Thursday, May 10 in Udimore Community Hall at 12.30 pm. The guest speaker will be Louise Ewington, secretary of the Papua New Guinea Church Partnership, who will be talking about her work. As usual there will be a raffle. Tickets are available from Liz Turgoose (01424-882657) or Judy Edwards (01424-882222) priced £10.00 for the 2-course meal.

The clock in the tower of St. George’s Church has for some time now been giving a bit of trouble with its time-keeping and chiming. It is probably more than a hundred years since a full-scale overhaul has been done and it looks as though it needs one now. Estimates are being obtained from specialists in these old clocks and it looks as though a cost of around £4,000-£5000 is going to be the outcome. It has been suggested that donations from the general public would go some way towards the cost but grants from the various funds available are being looked into as well. More details of the exact work and costs should be obtained very shortly and will be publicised as they come to hand.

The Mobile Library calls again next week on Tuesday, May 1, from 3.00 to 3.40 pm in Oakhill Drive and 3.50 to 4.25 pm in Reedswood Road. It will also be at the Village Hall on Thursday, May 3, from 1.25 to 1.55 pm. Apart from reading books, the Library has audio books as well as access to the internet and reference library.

Services at St. George’s Church during the coming week will be a Sung Eucharist at 9.30 am and Evening Prayer at 6.00 pm on Sunday, April 29, with Holy Communion on Wednesday, May 2 at 10.00 am. The next Messy Church is being held on Tuesday, May 1, at 4.00 pm in Udimore Community Hall. It is for all ages and an adult must bring a child or vice versa. Each meeting is themed, has a creative messy activity, sing song and ends with a shared meal. This meeting’s theme will be ‘Creation’. Trinity Church joins Westfield Parish Church on Sunday, April 29, for the 10.30 am service that will be conducted by Mrs. Gillian Lambourne.
