And there was a wealth of items for early Christmas shoppers to buy on the many stalls, including bric a brac, soft toys, puzzles, videos, books, cards, home-made cakes and scones, and for the more adventurous tangy preserves of lime marmalade and rhubarb & ginger chutney.

Along with the generous donations, individual items provided by talented local people were also available.

A wide selection of beautifully knitted baby clothes were expertly made by nimble fingered Pauline Isted, with the help of a friend.

Clearly a lot of work had gone into the colourful range, but Pauline said they both enjoy knitting, adding: "It keeps us out of mischief."

Artist John Holman, donated all the proceeds from the sale of a selection of his stunning, original seascape and rural landscape scenes, sold at the event; painted in watercolours, signed and expertly framed.

In addition there was a raffle and tombola; teas and coffees were served.

With over 540 raised, Chairman of the Bexhill BHF Lesley Oliver extended her thanks to everyone who had worked so hard to make the day such a success and said: "Most of the dedicated volunteers are in some way connected to people with heart problems."

Lesley said that there are opportunities for new volunteers who may have a few hours to spare and said: "We are always looking for, and welcome, new helpers."
