Brownies and Guides celebrate 100th birthday in Bognor

Hundreds of members of Girlguiding Bognor Regis joined in the UK's biggest birthday bash of the year.

The 300 Rainbows, Brownies, Guides, senior section members and volunteers took part in the launch of the 550,000-strong movement's centenary celebrations.

They were invited to an action-packed party at the Arun Leisure Centre in Felpham last Saturday.

A large number of activities included an inflatable obstacle course, Punch and Judy and face-painting as well as sideshows '“ such as treasure hunts, name the bear and a human fruit machine '“ run by local groups.

The party was officially opened by MP Nick Gibb, who is an ambassador for Girlguiding Bognor Regis.

He joined in many of the games and activities. "Guiding helps girls and women build their self confidence and independence," he said.

"With the numbers of girls who are part of this movement, this is of great benefit to the wider community as a whole."

The party was a total success.

It ended with a large birthday cake being cut by one of the oldest-serving members and one of the newest Rainbows.

Girlguiding Bognor's division commissioner Penny Thomas said: "The party was really great. It went very well and all the girls had a great time."
