Businessman saves day for children

A roly poly workshop in Middleton is set to go ahead on Good Friday thanks to a newly arrived local businessman.

Paul Goldthorpe, of the Elmer Hotel, agreed to save the event and avoid leaving dozens of children disappointed when he found out it was set to be cancelled.

Months of preparation by youth leader Sylvia Marshall had gone into the children's workshop at St Nicholas Church.

She had more than 40 youngsters signed up for the chance to make the traditional pudding and custard. Twelve teenagers had also offered to help with the other activities taking place at the workshop.

But was unable to contact the chef who had agreed to lead the session as the final preparations began.

Mr Goldthorpe stepped in, after only taking over the lease of the hotel on March 30, and will run the cooking at the workshop with his business partner and girlfriend.

Mrs Marshall said: "It's great to see our local village inn working alongside the local community and our church."
