The trail follows in the footsteps of the hugely successful Snowdogs by the Sea event in 2016, and will see 50 snail sculptures dotted around the city this September.

Each of the snails will be sponsored by local organisations and decorated to individual designs by artists. At the end of the trail the snails will be auctioned to raise funds for Martlets Hospice in Hove.

The British Airways i360 snail is being decorated by local artist Serena Sussex, who has been painting Brighton cityscapes for more than 30 years.

Serena said she is inspired by the wonders of nature and urban landscapes around East Sussex, and by her travels worldwide. Through her work she aims to portray 'a sense of tranquility and an air of mystery showing the wonders of life'.

Ahead of the trail, the i360 is inviting children to send in artwork for a Young Artists Competition, which will be judged by Serena Sussex along with Frederique Bailey of Bailey Contemporary Arts, i360 chair Julia Barfield and executive director Steve Bax.

The shortlisted entries from four age categories will be displayed at the attraction during the summer holidays. Prizes include flight tickets, multi-attraction passes, pottery lessons at Art Shop and Pottery, and items from Bailey Contemporary Arts, The Pottery Painting Café and Fiveways Arts and Crafts.

Imelda Glackin, CEO of Martlets, said: “We’re delighted that British Airways i360 is running this creative kids competition to generate excitement in their sponsorship of the Snailspace campaign. It’s a fantastic example of how this unique art project brings the community together and connects children, artists and businesses in the city.”

Steve Bax, British Airways i360 executive director, said: “We are proud to be a Snailspace sponsor and to be working closely with Martlets for a second year.

“A trip on the British Airways i360 pod is slow, smooth and gentle, just like the movement of the snail, and our visitors often tell us how they love to rise above it, slow down and enjoy shared time making new memories together.

“Serena is a very talented artist and we look forward to seeing our snail’s design and character come to life in the weeks ahead.
