Car firm holds off Teville Gate approach

HANSON development company wants to buy the Steeles motor franchise premises in Teville Road.

Steeles showrooms are next to the Hanson-owned Teville Gate precinct site, which has been partly cleared in readiness for redevelopment.

Adding Steel's showrooms and car forecourt space to the former precinct area would give Hanson much more flexibility in developing the area. Office space above the showrooms is currently being advertised as available to let.

Confirmation that discussions between the two businesses had taken place was given to the Herald on Monday by Alan Steele, managing director of the family motor dealership.

Mr Steele said of the developers: "They are flying various kites in varying directions. About four years ago, Farrho (the former developers) offered something for our site and we just laughed."

He confirmed that recently there had been discussions with Hanson, but "we have held off".

Mr Steele said his company had 60 years in Worthing behind it and it did not want to move to other than a contained site which could also accommodate the firm's other facilities at Broadwater and Goring.

"The trouble is, there is no suitable main-road site at present available in Worthing. We are awaiting further contact with Hanson," he added.

Worthing Council wants to see a multiplex cinema and a new Aquarena swimming pool included on the Teville Gate site development.
