CASH TO MAKE TOWN FLOWER

TWO Lewes groups have received grants under the Community Service Volunteers scheme, in partnership with the Environment Agency.

Cllr Ruth O'Keeffe, who applied for the grants on behalf of Lewes Little Gardens and the environmental body Lacewings, said: 'The projects are scattered around the town, starting with a bulb planting project in Stansfield Road on February 18.

'This will be followed by tub planting at the junction of Grange Road and St Pancras Road, a spring clean on Eridge Green, and planting at the junction of Middle Way and Cross Way and in Winterbourne in March.

'Then there will be planting at the corner of De Montfort Road in April, and finally litter-picks at the Pells and Western Road in May and June.'

The grants total 494 and will provide 42 packs of bulbs, 17 litter picker-uppers, 14 trowels, 13 bags of compost, 12 bulb planting dibbers and an assortment of other tools and resources.

Ruth posted the applications on Monday last week and was phoned on Thursday last week with the good news.

Volunteers taking part will receive a certificate and there are plans for people attending five events or more to receive a Lewes Little Gardens sweatshirt.
