Compost campaign

School children across East Sussex are leading the way in recycling their food waste, thanks to the County Council's Compost Doctors.

Last year, eight schools successfully applied for Community Waste Action Grants of up to 500 to help them run composting projects. Now they've benefited from visits from the Compost Doctors, who've given tips and advice on how to use that money to start composting and choosing the right composting system.

As well as schools, some community organisations have received grants for composting. One, the Hastings-based Lower Torfield Allotment Association asked for money to buy materials to build new composting bins.

Councillor Matthew Lock, Lead Member for Transport and Environment, said: "I'm delighted these schools and other organisations have been awarded this money to kick start their composting. It's a great way of keeping kitchen and garden waste out of landfill, and turning it into a great resource for gardeners".
