Alcohol sold to children in Horsham

Children have been sold alcoholic drinks at two off-licence shops in Horsham.

Police snared The Co-op in North Parade and Mulberrys in Park Way during a series of test purchases yesterday (Thursday February 21).

The aim of the operation, carried out by the neighbourhood licensing team, was to identify licensed premises selling alcoholic drinks to children under 18-years-old and to take appropriate action.

A total of six premises were tested in the south area of Horsham.

The two offending stores failed by selling alcohol and staff were given £80 fines.

Sergeant Tony Jarred from the Licensing Team said: “It is unacceptable for any premises to sell alcohol to children.

“Not only can alcohol cause children harm but there is also a well known link between alcohol and anti-social behaviour.

“Sussex Police will look to take robust action against any premises where underage sales are made.”
