Death comes five years after daughter's murder

THE apparent suicide of DCI Jim Torbet comes five years after his teenage daughter was murdered by her boyfriend.

Mr Torbet's life had been overshadowed by the murder of his 19-year-old daughter Rae by her ex-boyfriend Dellwyn James in 2003.

Mr Torbet was in court in September 2005 to witness his daughter's killer jailed for life.

During the court case the jury heard how her murderer, Dellwyn James, had tried to kill himself with an overdose of paracetamol and alcohol shortly after splitting from Miss Torbet - and had then made a second attempt at suicide after killing her.

Mr Torbet said at the time that he hoped it would be 'third time lucky' for the killer in his next suicide attempt.

'This was never the greatest "whodunnit" murder investigation,' the stricken police officer said at the time.

'With regards to Dellwyn James, I would just like to say all the luck in the world.

'He allegedly attempted to commit suicide, and after killing my daughter, he allegedly attempted to commit suicide. Now I say third time lucky, I wish him all the luck.'
