Don't lose your vote

DISTRICT and parish elections are due in Rother next year, and residents are being reminded to check now that they are on the electoral register.

Failure to ensure their details are correctly logged with Rother District Council could mean they are barred fromm voting when official polls take place.

And that could also include the forthcoming national referendum on proportional representation.

By the end of August all households should have received voter registration forms, which need to be confirmed as correct or sent back to the council with amendments.

To make the process easier, residents can now text their confirmation on 80212, using a code number on the voter registration form.

This can also be done on-line by visiting www.registerbyinternet.com/rother or by calling freephone number 0800 197 6193. Alterations made to forms should be posted back in the envelope provided.

Canvassers appointed by Rother District Council, each carrying clear identification, will shortly visit the homes of anyone who has not responded. This is a legal obligation.

Rother chief executive amnd electoral registration officer Derek Stevens said: "We're facing a busy year for elections, and I would encourage everyone in the district to use their vote to help shape their community.

"If you're not registered, you have no say. No vote, no voice - it's as simple as that."
