Dormitory town beckons for Bognor Regis

Welcome to the dormitory town, Bognor Regis businesses have told councillors.

The town's chamber of commerce has come out strongly against proposals for a 2,500 home settlement in North Bersted.

This would create a small town of 3,150 dwellings when it was combined with the nearby site six development.

Chamber chairman and president Nick Stuart-Nicolson said: "The chamber envisages that this would create yet another dormitory town for Chichester and beyond and have little or no effect on employment propects for Bognor town.

"The (developers') consultants have claimed that the proposed accompanying commercial area would create one job per household. This is clearly quite illogical," Mr Stuart-Nicolson added.

"The access toward Bognor is totally incapable of any further improvement as both Chichester Road and Aldwick Road have already reached their capacity.

"Whenever, if ever, the Bognor relief road is built, that too will reach its full capacity on day one.

"Other roads in the vicinity of Chalcraft Lane are narrow, winding country roads which even now have their total capacity and more at normal rush hour times."

Any development should take place on the A29 to the north of the town, he stated.

This should result in improvements to the road and create benefits in better traffic conditions for residents in that area.

He pointed out that the distance from Westergate to the proposed business park at Oldlands Farm is about the same as it is from Chalcraft Lane.

"The chamber represents the majority of businesses in the area and, in this respect, needs to welcome more residents.

"But not in areas where the infrastructure would not support new developments," he added.
