Drivers prepare for summer delays

Contractors are due to start work on Monday, July 6 on a major resurfacing and maintenance scheme on the bridge carrying the Littlehampton bypass over the railway, between the Horsham Road roundabout at Littlehampton and the Mill Lane junction at Rustington.

The work is expected to last approximately four months, right through the summer season, when the road is busy with holidaymakers and daytrippers visiting the area. A 40 miles per hour speed limit will be in force on that stretch of the road.

Last year drivers endured long hold-ups on the A259 while the new traffic light junction at Sainsbury's, Rustington was under construction.

Mike Northeast, Arun and town councillor for Littlehampton Ham ward, attacked the timing of the latest roadworks.

"I really don't understand why the county council has to wait until our busiest time of the year for this, when we are trying to show off to visitors what we have to offer them, but their first experience of the area is roadworks and a go-slow.

"Surely this is a job that could be done at night '” it's far enough from houses for people not to be disturbed.

"Last weekend we were, yet again, under siege when there was a problem on the A27 and everything was diverted onto the A259. If that happened again during these roadworks, I wouldn't want to be trying to come here. I just hope they clear the roadworks away at weekends."
