Bulbs to brighten up Rustington in the springtime

BUDDING gardeners have given an early start to Rustington’s bid for more floral success next year.

Ten pupils from Summerlea Primary School helped to launch the Rustington in Bloom 2012 campaign by planting more than 900 daffodil bulbs in the wildlife garden at the Woodlands Recreation Ground.

The enthusiastic young gardeners were accompanied by their head teacher Jane Blackman and teaching assistant Mandy Chittenden on a beautiful autumn afternoon and, although the planting was hard work, they clearly enjoyed themselves.

Earlier this year they spent an afternoon planting butterfly-loving plants in the wildlife garden, which looked superb all summer.

More bulbs will be planted later this month in Holmes Lane by the 1st Rustington Scouts Forest Beaver colony.

The Rustington in Bloom committee is already planning its programme for next year, when the Queen’s diamond jubilee will be an added incentive for the village to build on its successes over the past few years, including gold awards at regional and national level.

The committee has three fund-raising events already planned, with a Christmas stall on December 3 in the community garden at Rustington Museum, a horse racing night on March 24 and a plant sale in the Methodist Church garden on May 5.

Other events are being planned for later in the year. The committee would like to encourage more community involvement and would ask individuals and or groups to make contact with their ideas, or just come along and help. The committee can be contacted through Rustington Parish Council’s offices.
