Family and friends help Edith celebrate

A WESTERGATE resident celebrated her 100th birthday with a garden party for her friends and relatives.

Edith Hughes thanked all those who went along to her special occasion at her home in Meadow Way.

She received 55 cards as well as an array of beautiful flowers and presents. The lovely card from the Queen arrived just before 1pm and Edith has given it pride of place on her mantlepiece.

The decent weather on the day meant many of her visitors were able to sit in her garden during her open house during the afternoon.

Edith was born in South Wales and went to work in London at the start of the second world war.

She was an evacuee officer. Her husband, who was also Welsh, was in the Royal Navy.

After living in West London, they decided to retire to Westergate in 1974.

They made many friends in the village and were particularly active in St Mary’s Church in Aldingbourne.
