Firefighters deal with weighty matter

AN alert fire chief averted what could have been a serious accident when a logo estimated to weigh more than 250lbs came loose.

Firefighters have a perfect view from the first floor of Bexhill fire station of Bexhil Leisure Centre on the opposite side of Little Common Road.

Explaining Thursday afternoon's sequence of events, Watch Commander Graham Fletcher said: "I happened to glance out of the window and saw that the logo at the top of the Leisure Centre was hanging loose.

"We had to get the aerial ladder platform over from Hastings to get it down.

"The sign is about a metre and a half high and must weigh between 250 and 300lbs.

"If it had fallen it could have killed someone."
