A RYE hotel’s charity efforts have made a real difference to elderly and vulnerable people using the Rye and District Day Centre.

The George in Rye launched a new initiative during 2013 to support local charities with the help of its own guests. When they check-out the hotel asks its guests to add £1 donation onto their bills to one of two local charities on offer. In addition, the George is matching any donation with a further £1, and so doubling the proceeds available.

The Rye and District Day Centre , which provides help and social interaction to the elderly people of Rye and the surrounding villages, has become the latest beneficiary of the scheme and in December received £1,092. This was also gift aided to maximise the overall donation.

Dave Pellen, from the Day Centre, said: “This very kind and wonderful donation allows the Rye and District Day Centre to supplement the costs of Rye and District Community Transport and a volunteer driver bringing our members to and from the Day Centre at Magdala House, Ferry Road, where we meet on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

“It also enables the opportunity to fund trips out for our members which usually includes lunch.”

He added: “The Rye and District Day Centre is a self funding charity and relies heavily on fund raising and the generous donations from local organisations and companies.

“Without this support the Day Centre would not be able to provide services to the elderly people of our community.

“The members of the Day Centre benefit by having the ability to get out and meet other people and socialise over tea or coffee and biscuits.

“This is followed by seated exercises, led by qualified teachers, which is so very important to the well being of our members.

“This is then followed by a two course lunch prepared by our own cook.

“After lunch our members generally participate in the variety of activities which are available, such as games, quizzes, craft or art, or just the chance to relax in warm surroundings. From time to time a guest in invited to speak on a relevant topic.

George Owner Alex Clarke said of the charity scheme: “This idea enables the George’s guests the opportunity to give something back to the local area they have come to visit. The guests also appreciate the fact that the George matches the donations.”
