His proud parents Tom and Penny, of Wickham Avenue, have been following him every step of the way.

Tom said: "We speak to him almost everyday. I think he is really starting to enjoy it now. It is stressful - but then it is for all of them."

Although his parents only moved to the town recently, Michael has plenty of other local links.

His girlfriend Charlene, who is a West End performer in her own right and lives with Michael in London, grew up in Bexhill.

And his sister Holly, whose 18th birthday the family celebrated back-stage last week, still lives at home and attends Hastings College.

Tom said "I'm in awe of anybody who goes out and sings live, they know they only get one chance. Hopefully Michael can take his on Saturday."
