Late last month saw the inaugural meeting of Handcross Ladies' Association which has taken the place of the Women's Institute in the village. It was very well attended by past members of the WI along with many new faces which was very promising. Once the business element of the meeting had taken place - a constitution agreed and approved and the year's program finalised - the fun could start! Terry Creasy gave a demonstration of Tai Chi which everyone joined in and by all accounts thoroughly enjoyed and despite it being a '˜gentle' form of exercise, it appeared to stimulate the appetites of those attending as everyone tucked in to the many delicious cakes members had baked! If this has piqued your interest, the next meeting will be next Tuesday, 21 February at 7.30 pm in the Parish Hall. Whilst mentioning Tai Chi, classes have started again in the Parish Hall, taking place on a Friday morning between 10 and 11 am and cost £6 per session. I doubt cakes will be on offer at the end of each lesson but I’m sure you will be made to feel very welcome by the current members! The next Community Bus trip will be to Polhill Garden Centre in Sevenoaks next Tuesday, 21 February, get in touch with Christina either in the Hardware Shop or on 400212. If you, or you know someone who is interested in steam engines, the outing in March might be of more interest! The Bus will be going to Kew Bridge Steam Museum on Saturday, 25 March; there will be working steam pumping engines to look at, being part of a collection from many Victorian water pumping stations. Watch this space for more details but I can say the fare is expected to be £15.

Last month’s Parish Council meeting was attended by members of staff from Crest Nicholson, the company that will be responsible for the development of the land to the south west of the primary school, having already held an open session in the Parish Hall earlier that same day. They confirmed that the plan was to build 75 units, 23 of which will be ‘affordable’. Whilst the initial plans as put to the village by Hyde/Hallam so many months ago included a care home, Crest Nicholson will not be responsible for this which at the moment has not managed to generate any interest from developers. They confirmed that access to the development will be through existing roads with new roads within the development. The units that will be built opposite the existing homes in Hoadlands will be in keeping with them in design but if I understood correctly, they are still in discussion with Mid Sussex District Council with regard to the design of the remaining units.

Whilst on the subject of Mid Sussex District Council, it would appear that until they have had their District Plan passed by the Inspector, we are unable to progress to any great degree on the numbers of housing within our Neighbourhood Plan. At the meeting last week it was confirmed that MSDC hope to be in a position to confirm the final housing figures by the end of March but at the moment the numbers the Committee is looking at are looking positive. If you have signed up to receive emails on any major developments in the NHP, you will already be aware that the Committee will be holding the exhibition I have been talking about for so long on Friday 7 and Saturday 8 April between 6 and 8 pm and 10 am and 12 noon respectively in the Pavilion. I’m sure this will be well advertised not only in the village but the Parish as a whole but please do go along on either date and make sure your friends and neighbours go along as well, we really must do all we can to get this Plan passed! I left the meeting under the impression that the Committee were feeling very positive that everything is slotting into place and they are on schedule!
