Hurst Green village voice

The Headmaster, Mr. White, gave a presentation on his ideas for closer integration between school and village. The Chairman, Cllr. Browne, described his presentation as “the best thing that has been suggested in Hurst Green for years”, and it was received with applause from council members and the public.

The other matter concerned a pilot scheme presented by Miss Mason for more activities for older people in Hurst Green. “Ageing Well” is a government initiative which is being organised locally by Rother District.

It is hoped that events can be arranged in the future and volunteers are required to get this under way.

There is a group which meets on Black Bin Day (alternate Tuesdays) at the small hall in the village hall in order to enjoy an afternoon of chat, bingo and a cup of tea, with music or games from time to time. No formal membership, just turn up at 2pm and you will be welcome to join “The Black Binners”. There are hopes that this may be the foundation of more facilities for the “Over 21’s Again”.

Age Concern still meets in Robertsbridge on Mondays. Transport can be provided.

The interior of the shop complex is proceeding well and the entire site looks well tended and refurbished.

Plans for the Jubilee Celebrations are well advanced, a beacon will be lit and a tree planted.

The tightening up of speeding was discussed but cut backs stall progress for signs. The cost of installing a waning is over £3000, but as council members observed, “What is that in exchange for a child’s life?” .

David Hillbourn’s continued support and advice are much appreciated in his position now as appointed Responsible Financial Officer.

Brownies have been busy again this time with Rainbows and Guides when over eighty girls from 5 to 15 gathered for the International Craft Fair Day at the village hall on Saturday. Delightful artificial posies, pictures, necklaces and other artifacs were created by the girls from designs from all over the world.

The village was thronged with boys and girls in colourful costumes on Friday as they returned from school where they had enjoyed National Book Day. Each pupil came dressed as their favourite character, we saw Snow White, Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz little chimney sweeps and people with big ears and tails!

Meet of the Tongue was “a fantastic success” when Saffron Sumerfield Performed to a large audience at Mistletoe Barn straight from a tour of the USA and Europe. Her songs were superb and the evening was a star turn for all who attended. The next meeting will be as usual the first Friday of the month. This is Good Friday but there will an evening of “More Space for Song and Poem” on that evening. Phone 01580 860 528 (apologies for the last digit being wrong last week)

Tickets for the pantomime may be bought at Tecknique Hairdressers for the performances on March 23/24.

Don’t forget gifts for our troops may be left there at the same time.

March 24 a table top sale will be held in Robersbridge village hall and it is hoped that people from other villages will support. It is organised to help the excellent charity BLISS which exists for babies born too small, too early or sick.

All kinds of stalls will be there and any goods, cakes, plants etc you can offer will be welcome. Phone 01580 881 845.

March 25 by invitation only, the share holders’ meeting will be held in the shop complex.

March 31 the twinning association holds an evening of rock and roll by live band Taxi at the village hall, 8pm start, tickets (£5) from 01580 860 710 / 07889 923 724.
