HEY YOU GUYS THERE’S A PIZZA PARTY!: Recently I returned home from an all-day function during our heat wave, to find a freezer full of de-frosted food. It wasn’t the freezer, .It was entirely my fault, because I hadn’t shut the door properly. .There was nothing for it but to dispose of all the food and ring the insurance company. I have only ever made one small claim in forty years, but I still felt monstrously guilty. I would never chance compromising food hygiene though, so it all had to go. Anyway, I cooked all the chicken up for the cat., threw out all the rest and re-shopped, thinking “what a waste of time and good food” .However, all was not lost. I cooked 10 pizzas for the birds. I made a point of cooking them well, [unsure whether or not birds can get gastro-enteritis from de-frosted pizza!] but they loved them. I could almost hear them flying around tweeting “Hey fellas!, a word to the wise, get round to the Griffin’s place, the lady of the house has gone crazy with the pizza!” In fact,, I was enjoying giving our feathered friends a bit of a party!. They are still flying around saying “did you have the barbequed chicken or the pepperoni. Me! no I got the stuffed- crust Hawaiian . Man it was delicious, I’m telling you buster, I’ll never eat another fat ball as long as I live!”

DO YOU REALISE: Do you realise that once in the fenced- off confines of ‘Bargains Galore’, at the Iden Fete, that the world is our oyster, for here we can buy next years wardrobe, various ‘ Objet D’art’ to grace our home, a pile of books for beside the bed, enough toys to furnish a crèche, and a hotchpotch of things to take home and admire, and all at minimal cost. .On the other hand, ‘Bargains Galore’ is a fine place to dispose of the belongings, no longer wanted in our lives. It’s cathartic to clean out the shed and the attic, and get rid of unwanted belongings now and again. Start with a clean slate. They do say that getting rid of clutter is good for the soul! Nice to know too that we are helping good causes into the bargain .SO-------If you have anything to donate to ‘Bargain’s Galore’, it would be much appreciated. A SERVICE OF HOLY COMMUNION: There will be a service of Holy Communion, on Sunday 12th July, at 9.30 am, in Iden Parish Church.

THE POP-IN: The next Pop-In, is on Monday 20th J uly, at 11 am in Iden village hall. Do come along, for coffee/tea and biscuits and meet up with other Iden villagers for a pleasant morning.

BINGO: The next Bingo will be Thursday 23rd July in Iden village hall. Doors open at 2pm., eyes down at 2.30pm. Everyone is welcome, from Iden and the surrounding area, and there is a raffle, a tea at half time, a flier and a jackpot, besides the usual bingo books. It’s a fun afternoon.

FORTY SHADES OF GREEN: While venturing towards Tenterden this week I took a long hard look at the many shades of green which make up our landscape. There before me was a whole palette of green, and not only that, the leaves had such varied textures, some floppy and delicate-looking, and some so stiff that you could snap them in two. Some trees and hedges were a real yellowish-green, some pale, almost faded-looking, and some so vibrant that they were almost ghoulish. They blended into this amazing back cloth, and were visibly changed into light and shade by the sun’s rays. One particular leaf on the grass verge, I noticed was greyish , and the texture of velvet .Do you find that you take nature for granted on some days, drive past it without really looking at it, yet, on another day, aspects of it can suddenly overwhelm us, and we look at it as though seeing it for the very first time?

A SENSE OF BELONGING: The funny thing about visiting Rye Market on a Thursday is that I always come back with things that I had no idea I couldn’t live without. New varieties of oranges for instance, cross- pollinated, and with weird names that I must just try, because it makes me feel ‘cosmopolitan!’. I fill my basket with sweets and crisps that I shouldn’t even lay eyes on, and haberdashery. [There is something irresistible about all those buttons and cards of press studs]. I used to love buying the grandchildren colouring books, and I rue the day they became too old for them. [There is surely nothing nicer for a child than anticipating a pristine colouring book] There is usually someone demonstrating how to clean leather or windows with whatever piece of magic they hold in their hand, but it’s the people I like to mingle with. When you think that we all have two eyes, a nose and a mouth, it’s incredible isn’t it, how different everyone is, all pausing at a different stall, buying things that they suddenly cannot live without. The nicest thing for me though is that I live here. I don’t have to climb onto a coach and go back to a hotel. The market is on our patch. Just a four minute drive up the hill, and I’m perusing my wares, putting the kettle on, and giving the birds the last pizza [Mozzarella and red onion], there’s already a magpie saying “Hey Charlie, catch a load of this one”!]
