Improved results in maths and science for 14-year-olds

School test results in East Sussex are continuing to improve according to the latest figures from DfES.

Detailed statistics for 13 and 14-year-olds published today show some significant improvements in pupils' performance in maths and science - where the county is performing above the national average.

The figures for 2006 show that in East Sussex, 78% of pupils achieved Level 5 or above in maths, an improvement of 4% on last year. There was a similar improvement in science where 73% achieved Level 5 or above compared with 68% last year.

In English, however, performance dipped with 70% at Level 5 compared with last year's figure of 74%. Overall the county's schools and colleges performed better than last year. The number of pupils achieving Level 5 and above nationally was 77% for maths, 72% for science and 73% for English.

Cllr Rupert Simmons, Lead Member for Learning and School Effectiveness said: "These figures show that our schools and colleges are continuing to improve. I am, of course delighted with the maths and science scores where our young people are achieving above the national average and have made significant improvements on last year. We clearly need to focus on raising our English results to above the national average as well. However, we are not alone in this respect and nationally English results have dropped."

The following schools achieved exceptionally good results with over 80% of students reaching level 5 or above in all three subjects:

Claverham Community College

Heathfield Community College

Uckfield Community Technology College

Uplands Community Technology College

Chailey School

St Richard's Catholic College, Bexhill-on-Sea
