Lib Dem scrutiny group bid fails

A BID by Liberal Democrats to have Battle Town ward member Kathryn Field installed as chairman or vice-chairman of Rother District Council's Services Overview and Scrutiny committee failed at the authority's annual meeting on Wednesday last week, May 25.

Conservative councillors Paul Osborne and Paul Lendon, each nominated by members of the ruling Tory group, were elected as chairman and vice-chairman respectively in a ballot of committee members.

Other committee chairmen and vice-chairmen, all elected unopposed, were: Planning, Cllr Brian Kentfield (Cons), chairman, and Cllr Nick Ramus (Cons), vice-chairman; Resources Overview and Scrutiny Committee, Cllr Martin Mooney (Con), Cllr Charles Clark (Ind); Licensing and General Purposes Committee, Cllr Robin Patten (Con), Cllr Joanne Gadd (Con).

It was agreed that while the district council has no direct responsibility in such fields, Cllr Angharad Davies (Con) should become its spokesperson on health and well-being issues, and Cllr Brian Kentfield (Con) its spokesperson on education.
