Littlehampton sporting talent given a helping hand

WITH the Olympics edging ever closer, Littlehampton Swimming and Sports Centre is making a call for talented young athletes to step out into the limelight.

Inspire Leisure, which runs the Littlehampton centre and the Arun Leisure Centre at Felpham, is urging young people to apply for a special sports development programme this year.

All those aged between 14 and 21, who compete at county level or upwards in their chosen sport, are invited to apply for support from the organisation’s talented athlete programme.

Up to 20 sporting youngsters could benefit from the programme, which provides a year’s free membership at Inspire Leisure’s sites, worth £380.

Tom Stride has been a member of the scheme for the last two years and is a county level rugby player, who recently made the last stage of trials for the England under-18 squad. Although he missed out on a place in the squad, he is full of praise for Inspire’s programme.

He said: “Being able to access the gym on a regular basis has enabled me to improve my fitness in terms of strength and size, which are vital for my sport. I would not have been able to progress in the way that I have without this support.”

As well as having access to all the facilities at both the sports sites, candidates also receive on-going support from the centres’ fitness instructors. The scheme runs from the April 1, 2012, to March 31, 2013.
