Littlehampton's green motor track bid

LITTLEHAMPTON is on the starting grid for what is believed to be the first totally "green" motor racing curcuit in the country.

Powered by wind and solar engergy, the pollution-free kart track would also include an eco-centre to educate schoolchildren about green technology.

Greenpower, which works with school pupils to build electric karts, has submitted plans to build the project on land north of Norway Lane, Littlehampton.

Barry Shears, who founded the company 10 years ago, said he was very excited by the prospect of bringing such an attraction to the town.

"I want kids to see the complete link between the fun of building and racing electric carts, and how the technology will affect their future."

The plan sets out to build a location where children can go to build and test karts, for which Greenpower produce kits, as well as learn about how to be green, in all areas of life.

"It's a natural progression from what we are doing at the moment. When we first started, green was just the colour of the grass. Now it is in everything we do."

Powered by wind turbines and solar panels, the centre would be completely self-sufficent energy-wise, and even produce enough electricity to be sold back to the national grid.

It would also be financially self-sufficent, by offering the track and karts up to residents and tourists at the weekends, as well as catering for the corporate market.

There would also be information on other, non-transport related, environmental issues.
