Log your property with Immobilise

TO mark the Home Offices National Burglary Day early this month, Bexhill police helped residents register on the national property list, Immobilise.

Officers used a laptop at PC World in Ravenside to register property for anybody who wished to do so.

Immobilise is a free service where people can register property such as TVs, computers, digital cameras and mobile phones.

When officers recover stolen property they check with Immobilise, which gives information on the owner's details.

Mobile phones are a particularly good example of property to register as the EMEI number cannot be removed from the phone. Police routinely check the EMEI number on mobile phones they recover.

Carol Studley, community safety co-ordinator for the Safer Rother Partnership, said: "This is part of the ongoing work of Rother Police to keep the number of burglaries in Rother low.

"Immobilise is a useful tool to maximise the chances of returning stolen property to their owners and successfully prosecute offenders.

We want to encourage all local residents to register their property."

Rother's Detective Inspector Owen Poplett said: "It is very frustrating when we arrest burglars and drug dealers in possession of suspected stolen goods if we are not able to identify from where the items have been stolen.

"We are unable to prosecute and often have to hand the property back to the offenders.

"As more and more people make use of Immobilise, this scheme will help to ensure more offenders are brought to book and losers reunited with their property."
