Lyminster pupils’ denim delight raises a decent sum

LYMINSTER Primary School’s dragon spirit was draped in denim on Friday (September 19) as pupils and staff alike joined a fundraising day.

Youngsters at the school, based in Wick Street, relished in the chance to wear their denim best for genetic disorder charity Jeans for Genes.

And many children certainly came out in force, not only wearing jeans, but denim jackets and skirts too.

Mandy Wood, Lyminster’s clerical assistant, said the day was a great success.

“The atmosphere was great. The children were really buzzing because they had chance to come to school in non-school uniform.

“We only ever really have three or four chances for them to do it throughout the year so they really love it.”

All the children and staff taking part were asked to donate £1 or whatever change they could muster to support the day.

And all the school’s efforts saw a respectable £182.50 being raised.

Mrs Wood added: “As the school gets bigger each year, the charity non-school uniform days get bigger, too.”

However, Mrs Wood said fundraisers like Friday’s were not just about having fun. There was a serious message behind them that they were hoping to impart to the children.

She said: “Supporting charity events is important for a different aspects. Obviously the children are having fun at the time. But it’s good for them to learn that there are people less fortunate than themselves.

“We teach them that there are other people who need our help and that we can do this in a fun way.”
