Making Christmas special for deprived children

Christmas treats are heading to deprived children in eastern Europe thanks to generous residents in Bognor Regis.

Nearly 900 boxes containing toys, sweets and clothes were collected at Bognor Regis Town Hall.

Staff joined Arun District Council chairman Cllr Graham Tyler in loading the final batch on to a truck last Friday.

The lorry's visit was the first stage on its long journey to schools, churches, refugee camps, orphanages and hospitals in countries including Croatia, Bosnia and Romania.

Cllr Tyler said: "Everyone realises what an important cause this is which is why so many people are keen to get involved.

"These boxes are the only gifts that many of these children will receive this Christmas."

Bognor Regis Town Hall manager Sue Stallard said: "It has been a fantastic effort from everyone this year. I'd like to say a huge thank-you to everyone who was kind enough to send in a box.

"The driver told us that the 535 boxes we gave him last week was his largest single pick-up.

"So, we are delighted to have made such a great contribution and hope it will make this Christmas extra special for these children."

The boxes contain items such as crayons and board games as well as practical goods such as hats and gloves. Chocolate is also popular.

They are tailored to the age ranges of two-five, six-11 and 12-15 years old.
