Memorial to postal workers

A memorial to Bognor Regis postal workers who lost their lives to war has been included in a new register.

The recognition of the sacrifices made by the mailmen is inside the Post Office in the High Street.

It is among more than 300 war memorials in the new Royal Mail War Memorial Database.

This has taken more than a year to compile and highlights many previously unrecorded memorials around the UK.

Royal Mail is thought to be the second largest custodian of war memorials in the country, with only the Church of England housing more.

British Postal Museum and Archive curator Chris Taft said: "Identifying and recording Royal Mail's war memorials has brought home the terrible impact that the first and second world wars had on communities.

"It is only when you gather this information together that you can really imagine the effect that these conflicts must have had."
