April's twin brother Jack was also in the car, which was travelling towards Chesterfield Road, but escaped with minor leg injuries.

Police are still appealing for witnesses to the accident, in which the family's Peugeot 405 car collided with a Mercedes box lorry just before 2pm around 250 yards from the junction with Sherwood Rise.

The deaths of Maxine and her daughter April Parnham, of Vale Road, have shocked the Mansfield Woodhouse community which was this week still reeling from the news of the tragedy.

Local shopkeeper Jitendra Patel, of Jones's Beer, Off Licence and News Shop on Vale Road, told Chad he was shocked and saddened by the deaths.

"It is extremely tragic," he told Chad. "Maxine often used to come in with the children to buy sweets and she was always very friendly and chatty.

"I have known them for about a year and a half and they were nice people who always talked when they came in. It is very sad.

"I don't know how the accident happened, but two lives have been lost, which is a great loss to our community."

The lorry driver was treated at King's Mill Hospital for minor injuries after the accident. His passenger was not hurt.

Anyone with information about the accident should contact police on 0115 9670999 ext 2252 or 2253.
