Stars such as Alison Kraus and Emmylou Harris feature alongside traditional southern states, cotton fields, mountain and early bluegrass singers and musicians. Under the direction of the Coen brothers, Clooney and his co-stars the comedy and the feel-good factor with the Mountfield Club providing the bar to make it an even more memorable experience. So eevrybody is catered for the Village Hall Committee are providing the popcorn and the snacks — and all for five quid on the door. Doors open at 7.30. Be there or be sad.

Netherfield Village Stores and Post Office Cafe and Coffee House: I am sure that even the most casual observer can’t help but have noticed the changes that are taking place at this community “hotspot”. The folding doors are on, shedding the first rays of light onto what will be the “in” place to be seen in the not too distant future. I have been reliably informed that “Lemon Drizzle Cake” was a winner in the tasting session and this promises to feature strongly on the menu to be presented to all the patrons of this local “Drink and Dine” establishment. Watch this space for further updates on the opening date.

Battle Observer Reader Suggestions : Last week I asked for reader’s suggestions as to articles or ideas that they thought would tantalise the taste buds of the people who read the Village Voice column. One enterprising reader, Ben Cordery, takes old poems (out of copyright) and adds his own words to those that are well known by everybody. I think they are a bit of fun. See what you think! The end of each line is denoted by a forward “slash” as the format of the paper does not facilitate being able to present it as you would expect to see it in a book.

“The owl and the pussycat and the fur coat “

by E.Lear & B.Cordery

I.

The Owl and the Pussy-cat went to sea/

In a beautiful pea green boat, /

Wrapped up warm to ride the storm /

The cat wore a nice fur coat. /

The Owl looked up to the stars above, /

And sang to a small guitar, /

“Pussy oh pussy can you lend me your coat, /

I’ve gone and left mine in the car, /

The car, /

The car! /

I’ve gone and left mine in the car!” /

II.

Pussy said to the Owl, “You elegant fowl! /

How charmingly sweet you sing! /

But I’ve heard enough, the sea is rough /

This boat is capsizing! /

They sailed away, for a year and a day, /

To the land where the Bong-tree grows /

And there, dead ahead in a rickety shed /

Was a pig selling rings and warm clothes/

Warm clothes, /

Warm clothes, /

Was a pig selling rings and warm clothes. /

III.

“Dear pig, are you willing to sell for one shilling /

Your ring?” Said the Piggy, “I will.” /

“And add to it please a coat down to my knees /

And a scarf all placed on one bill” /

They dined on mince, and slices of quince, /

Which they ate with a runcible spoon; /

There followed more quince and After Eight mints /

And the party was over too soon, /

Too soon, /

Too soon, /

And the party was over too soon. /

Battle Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group: The latest meeting of the BNPSG took place at The Almonry on Wednesday 20 January. Amongst other issues the date for printing the planned community “Survey” was discussed. The workload of the group has increased as the members strive to meet the milestones which are so important in keeping the momentum of the “Plan” on track. At the end of the day, it is all the readers of this paper and the community as a whole, who will decide how the next 25 years and beyond in the Parish, will look.
