New lease of life for empty homes

A FAMILY of six is settling into its new home after being handed the keys to a four-bedroom house in Meeching Road, Newhaven.

The house, which had been lying empty for some time, has been totally refurbished thanks to a partnership between New Downland Housing Association and Lewes District Council.

The Empty Homes scheme aims to bring affordable housing to those in need by transforming disused properties into comfortable homes.

It is also seen as an ideal way to tackle the problem of empty homes in the county.

It is hoped more people will benefit from the scheme with the refurbishment of two more homes in Newhaven currently underway.

Chief executive of New Downland Housing Association Mary Coburn said: 'We are delighted to be part of this scheme as it not only gives tenants a comfortable environment to live in but helps to combat the problem of properties lying empty and falling into a state of disrepair.

'It's hoped that by raising the profile of this scheme, more landlords will come forward and apply for grants, which in turn will give new life to rundown properties and give families in need of a good home some stability.'

Cllr Rod Wilson, district council cabinet member with specific responsibility for housing, added: 'It's such a waste to have properties lying empty when people are crying out for homes in the South East of England.

'This scheme can help ease that problem and give landlords a trouble-free way to let their houses and flats. We urge people to get in touch with us as we're always looking for suitable homes for those in need.'

The Empty Homes scheme operates jointly with empty homes officers from Lewes District Council and Brighton and Hove City Council to tackle the problem of empty properties in the area.

It provides property owners with advice and grants to turn empty and dilapidated properties into much needed homes. Payment of rent is guaranteed, even if the property is empty, while vacant possession is ensured at the end of the lease.

The empty property officer Deborah Stainforth is keen to hear from people about empty homes and eyesores in their community. People can call her on 01273 293297.
