New mental health centre for Hastings and St Leonards

A new service for people troubled by mental health problems opened in town this week.

The Lighthouse Rehabilitation Centre, in London Road, St Leonards, held an open day for visitors on Wednesday.

Stephen Sullivan, manager, said: "We found that there is a need for this sort of service in Hastings and St Leonards.

"The opportunity came for us to move in this building when it became vacant.

"This is our first venture. We are a private company which specialises in providing mental health services.

"The Lighthouse can offer a stepping stone from residential accommodation or hospital towards independent living and support is provided by experienced staff working with the resident to highlight and develop strengths, encourage autonomy and empowerment.

"Hopefully we can also help people get back into work or volunteering for charities."

The facility has 19 bedrooms, which are all en-suite and are fitted with showers.

There is also an activity room where service users can take part in things like yoga or sit in the large garden.

The Lighthouse consists of two large recently refurbished Victorian buildings.

Mr Sullivan said: "We can work with people who have been in hospital for a long time, in residential accommodation or have been having problems living independently at home."

The service offers individualised care plans and packages and works closely with any other member of staff from the mental health trust.

If anyone feels they need to use the service they can contact The Lighthouse on 01424 430111.
