Nick Gibb retains ministerial role under new PM

He said he was ‘delighted’ by the new prime minister’s decision to keep him at the helm of the Department for Education.

MP Gibb added it will enable him ‘to continue the work of improving academic standards in our schools’.

Having been first appointed to the role in May 2010, under David Cameron’s coalition government, a reshuffle in 2012 saw David Laws replace him before he returned to the post in 2014 as Minister for School Reform.

MP Gibb said the reform programme has been ‘extensive’ over the last six years ‘with 1.4 million more children in schools rated good or outstanding than in 2010’.

However it is clear he feels the work is far from over.

Outlining ongoing aims from ‘ensuring every pupil leaves primary school as an accomplished reader and fluent in arithmetic’ to ‘every young person’ having ‘the knowledge and skills they need to flourish in an increasingly demanding and competitive jobs market’.
