No1 FOR RECYCLING

The Lewes Household Waste Recycling Site is currently the best performing in the entire county.

Figures have revealed that the site, operated by Veolia Environmental Services (formerly Onyx) in partnership with East Sussex County Council, has recycled and reused 65% of its waste since April 2005, diverting a massive 2065 tonnes of waste away from depleting local landfill.

Over the last ten months the site has helped to recycle over 800 tonnes of green garden waste, over 250 tonnes of metal, over 100 tonnes of wood and cardboard and 90 tonnes of glass.

Located on Ham Lane, the site has been welcoming people and their rubbish for the last twenty years, come rain or shine.

It has seen some major changes during this time and now boasts a new layout, new signs and a wide range of recycling serviecs, including plastic bottles, wood, and TVs and computer monitors.

David Hicks, Veolia Environmental Services recycling site manager, says of the Lewes site: "We are very proud of the achievements at Lewes and at all of our sites and would like to thank our customers and staff for their fantastic recycling efforts. We are always looking for new ways to increase reuse and recycling and it is very rewarding to see such great results."

The Lewes site is one of twelve managed by Veolia Environmental Services in East Sussex, all of which have seen increases in their recycling levels. They have recycled and reused a combined average of almost 54% of their waste since April 2005.
