Observer Comment: Looking for that extra-special gift? Support Bexhill's traders this Christmas

IT'S a well-known fact that high streets up and down the country are suffering in the run-up to Christmas.

Bexhill is no exception - the double blow of the economic situation coupled with online shopping becoming increasingly popular, has left its mark here the same as in any other town.

So that’s why it is more important than ever to consider supporting local businesses in your quest for quality and affordable festive goodies.

This weekend is a great time to do just that.

Friday, December 2, is time for the traditional switch-on of the town’s Christmas lights and tree in Devonshire Square (from 5pm) with all the seasonal fun and games associated with the event.

On Saturday, December 3, traders are holding a bumper Christmas fun day which will focus on the whole town centre.

A whole series of raffles, games and competitions is planned, with a Santa’s grotto for the children at Toys Plus in St Leonard’s Road.

If you don’t already know, Bexhill has a wide range of independent local shops providing everything from gifts and jewellery through to electrical goods - and let’s not forget local produce.

So if you’re looking to source that extra-special gift, or want to find delicious Sussex fare for the Christmas table, take a look around the town centre this weekend and soak up the festive atmosphere.

Timely launch of street pastors

THERE’S a new force for good coming to the streets of Bexhill.

The street pastors scheme is looking to introduce patrols in the town on Friday nights initially, and later on Saturdays evenings until around 2am.

The idea has enjoyed a great deal of success in neighbouring Hastings, where teams regularly help people who have got into difficulties on a night out.

This extra presence on the streets will no doubt be reassuring, particularly in the wake of the vicious unprovoked attack on Mo Bourner.

Anybody concerned they might be preached at need not worry - organisers assure us the pastors are there to provide impartial, non-judgemental help.
