Back in the day

DAVID Woolf (November 25) did some unusual and interesting research on Postcards. But I think Bexhill never flourished principally as a visitors' holiday resort. It expanded when sea, air and water became a prime (free!) health attraction.

Thousands retired here to live - still do, and live a long time. And until 1939 Bexhill gained a name for its dozens of boarding schools.

The hotels (Granville, Metropole, and guest houses) filled with visiting parents - weekends with the children, half-term, sports days, school plays. The De La Warr Pavilion had a permanent repertory theatre, restaurant and cafe. The hotels held receptions, dances, school dancing classes, parties.

There was sea bathing, tennis parties, riding, blackberrying, cinemas. Excellent trams, bus and train services.

But possibly not so much casual holiday visiting and postcard- sending.
