Beach clean in verse

BEXHILL Environmental Group was delighted to receive this poem, sent anonymously, about our last beach clean on November 19. We like it so much we wanted to share it

Readers may feel inspired to come along to help with our next big beach clean, tomorrow, Saturday, December 3, meeting at 10am by the public conveniences at the western end of West Parade.

Big Beach Clean

“Lovely day”. “Quite perfect”.

(November?!) Blue bags,

green sacks and grabbers

at the ready.

Forty strong, this army pose.

A photo for the record.

They march away; on shingle crunch

the feet of keen beach cleaners.

Oh Big Society here we are!

The plastic bottles, plastic bags;

the rocket sticks, the tiny bits

of fishing net - so much of this.

To wind around a seabird’s leg

impossible to save

when circulation’s cut.

The satisfaction of this group

of over-sixties, under-tens,

the mums and dads accompanying,

to see the beach so clean

and rubbish well-collected.
