Calmly irritated

AS A long-time resident of the Bramley Green estate in Angmering, I am bemused and irritated by the fact that we are now having to have a huge amount of traffic furniture installed and double yellow lines on some roads.

The estate is 10-years-old and as far as I can tell, there have been no serious traffic incidents or accidents on the estate during that time.

It is not a strategic traffic route, in fact the loop from Nursery Road through Rowan Way to Bramley Way and back out to Roundstone Lane serves only Bramley Green residents, their visitors and some groups using the Community Centre.

Who is going to enforce these new prescribed traffic directives?

What next – speed cameras?

There must be more traffic signs in the short length of road I have just described than in the rest of Angmering!

I hope this is not a precursor to the fact that traffic will be diverted through the estate when the planners get their way and a whole new estate is built on the eastern side of Roundstone Lane which will involve that road being dug up to ensure utility companies can gain access.

The councils, both parish and county, pay little mind to the concerns of current village residents.

Having left the extensive (and unnecessary) traffic directives of the estate, we are faced with gridlock on the A259, which can only get worse once the new houses are built.

From Roundstone Lane, on into the village centre and towards the village primary schools, there is little evidence of the number of road signs and double yellow lining we can expect to see on Bramley Green estate and yet these roads are more widely used and in part form a bus route.

Rather than being an advantage, I think the measures proposed (and in part implemented) may actually be a blight for some Bramley Green residents.

Most people have the good sense to travel at sensible speeds through the estate and new road signs will not do anything to deter those unwilling to obey.

Less parking may cause a few less people to have to wait a few extra seconds to get through the “chicanes”, but it will also make it easier for those who still wish to speed to go even faster.

Visitors and tradesmen calling at houses in certain areas will find it difficult to park and this will probably result in more parking on grass verges and across driveways.

When the next election comes around, please don’t put fawning pamphlets through my door asking for my vote, do something that makes me want to vote for you in the first place – actions speak much louder than false promises and tinkering at the edges of much larger problems.
