Democracy wins

THE good news this week is that democracy is alive and well in East Preston in the outcome of the election of two new councillors for the East Preston Parish Council, originating from the result of the parish poll on August 25.

Even though none of the existing 11 councillors attended the vote count on Thursday evening to welcome the winners to their new responsibility, hopefully, their presence will bring the much-needed changes that the majority of fellow residents want.

It would be a major improvement if there was more transparency in the conduct of council business and genuine attention to the best interests of the residents in this community than we have seen in the past two years.

The expectation now is for changes, where arrogance and personal agendas go out and prudent, cost-saving, efficient management of taxpayers’ money comes in.

The councillors are now on notice from the residents that we are “watching them” in the knowledge that the next parish council election is scheduled for May, 2011, when we will be able to be able to speak again.

Democracy rules!
