Great '“ bring on the bench

HOW excited I am to read (Gazette, October 23) that a huge grant is forthcoming in support of the £1m bench, but so disappointed to note that more than 100 people oppose the plans.

Of course there will always be other pressing needs for funding, especially in these financially uncertain times, but money alone cannot make people happy.

The environment in which we live is crucial to our wellbeing, and any way in which this can be enhanced is surely an asset.

We don't all want more of the same uniformity and mediocrity in the architecture which surrounds us.

An aesthetic appreciation of the natural and man-made world enriches our lives, so bring on this bench, I say.

Thank goodness the grant is ring-fenced for arts projects and cannot be diverted elsewhere.

Give Littlehampton residents something to enjoy seeing and using.

It may provoke discussion, even controversy, but it will draw the visitors and help boost the local economy.

So, am I a cool youngster with trendy ideas?

Far from it!

I am a pensioner who has seen some of the ups and downs of life and I want to see new, different and exciting ideas flourish and come to fruition for the remainder of my lifetime and for generations to come.

Harsfold Road,

Littlehampton
