It sounds sensible, but do planners view everything in terms of money?

NO doubt Littlehampton residents have the responsibility for approving schemes that improve or spoil the town.

The Littlehampton Vision may well provide better development in the town centre than previous attempts, but it may be wondered if the planners view everything in terms of money, rather than amenity.

The seafront Green is still a great open green space for games and walking. How can anyone propose cutting it up with footpaths and follies? And even worse, turning the perimeter into a continuous car park, taking valuable space and ruining every view of the Green?

At present, the view from the river's east bank is of a fairly unspoilt west bank. Does anyone want to look across at more concrete, car parks, buildings, and yuppy marinas? The old timber dock and small island, should be left more or less intact.

A few fishermen and other boats in a dredged basin would be an asset. The island, if a better bridge to the west is provided, makes an excellent natural and picnic area.

As an aside, I wonder if anyone has considered the practicality of a low level pedestrian telescopic bridge across the mouth of the river, to the west bank. This could probably be extended for many hours a day at low tide, retracted at high tide for river traffic.

The fort, north of the dunes, is also an historic inheritance. This should be minimally conserved. And a public path around the perimeter would provide a better view of what survives.

Sea Road,

East Preston
