Notable absence

THERE was a by-election in East Preston on Thursday to elect two new councillors to sit on the council and represent the people of the village. I thought I would mention that, because I don’t think the current 11 sitting council members could have been aware of it.

I attended the count that takes place after the vote and not one of the current sitting council members were there to congratulate the winners and welcome them onto the council. To me that smacks of a complete lack of respect for the newly elected members.

I may have my differences with county councillor Peter Evans over depriving East Preston of proper fire cover, but at least he had the correct level of decency and respect to attend as befitting his position. So too did district councillor Richard Bower. Well done them!

Plaudits must also go to Ian Sumnall and Arun’s electoral services team, who after an extremely long day carried out the count in a very efficient manner.

I would like to congratulate Robert Ellis and Peter Vincent, the two candidates who were elected on the night and also commiserate with those candidates who failed to get elected. Hopefully, they will stand again at the parish council election next May.

Shame on the absent councillors on the night.

Sea Lane,
