I AM heartbroken to read of the tragic circumstances surrounding Mo Bourner and the ferocious unprovoked assault he recently endured on Bexhill's seafront. In a safe community such as Bexhill, where we feel free to walk anywhere, an event such as this is particularly repugnant.

Mo would have had no reason to believe when he walked with friends along the seafront, that life as he knows it would come to an end. Nor should he have. He was surrounded by friends. Just as with most youth he was enjoying himself in the crisp night air of the weekend.

I write because this dreadful event is almost a mirror of what happened to my own son several years ago. Readers may recall the full page image on the front of the Observer as my son lay in hospital, beaten to little more than a bloody pulp by pathetic gutless individuals.

And if that were not sufficiently horrifying, his assailants clearly demonstrated an utter contempt for the laws of our society by publishing an atrociously vile rap song on the internet, where they actually boasted about what they did and presumably from their song left the scene in the belief that my son was no longer breathing.

Just the lyrics alone makes one wonder what kind of degenerates my son’s assailants are. What possible role might their parents have played in their development? And particularly, when justice is served, in what form should it be?

And now, in poor Mo Bourner’s case, we’re compelled to ask the very same questions again. How should our judicial system react to this type of behaviour? And perhaps most of all, what ever can be done to assuage the pain and suffering this poor innocent boy is enduring?

I suspect there are some people who witnessed Mo’s assault who may be hesitant to come forward to give evidence. I implore you and I implore any parent who may have knowledge that their child witnessed Mo’s assault, to exercise your social responsibility in coming forward and presenting the police with any evidence you may have, regardless of how inconsequential you may believe it to be.

Without the participation of our community in reporting crime and the witnessing of crime, no judiciary is able to bring the perpetrators to justice. If you or your children have any knowledge of what happened to Mo Bourner, please contact the police immediately.
