Vital vision of harbour's future as commercial port

IT WAS gratifying to read your illustrated report (Gazette, October 30) of two commercial vessels leaving Littlehampton harbour together for the first time in seven years, and to realise that there are still some trading concerns who recognise the importance of Littlehampton as a commercial port.

The general public perception in recent years, I hope unfairly, is that the harbour commissioners' attitude is to tolerate a declining commercial usage.

This approach is indicated in your earlier report (Gazette, October 16) dealing with the regeneration of the west bank, which merely records that commercial shipping is declining, without any suggestion that this should be reversed for its economic benefit.

Arun District Council's vision for Littlehampton appears to assume the demise of Railway Wharf, whereupon it would be redeveloped for light industry or housing, and Littlehampton would cease to exist as a commercial port.

Such thinking would seem to be contrary to the current views of all the principal political parties, who support the promotion of "green" transport by rail, and coastal and inland waterways.

The Harbour Board's encouragement of leisure provision is to be welcomed, but there is no valid reason why this and commercial shipping, which adds to the economy and is a tourist attraction, should be regarded as incompatible.
