Pagham minibus makes one last journey

A popular minibus in Pagham could be about to carry its last passengers.

The community service is suffering from a crisis in recruiting drivers.

The number of those willing to get behind the wheel has halved in the past year.

Just four individuals are keeping the minibus on the road for the moment.

But the minibus's manager has warned more are needed to keep the bus operating.

Sandy Black combines that role for the Pagham and Nyetimber Residents' Association with being one of the drivers.

The 15-seat vehicle, the fifth in what is probably the service's 50 years, is used every weekday except for Thursdays.

It takes association members on weekly shopping trips to Bognor Regis, Chichester and Bognor's out-of-town shops.

It is also hired by groups such as the Pagham Chestnuts Club and Pagham Luncheon Club to take their members out.

"The situation is becoming critical," she said. "The service has been going for a long time. But we can't carry on with just four drivers. It's not enough.

"Drivers do not need a special licence for the minibus," said Mrs Black. "They only need to be between 18 and 25 and have an ordinary car licence."

Cllr Ray Radmall, the chairman of Pagham Parish Council, said: "It is a wonderful thing that this village has managed to run this service on volunteers for so long.

"People just need to be able to spare one afternoon a month to help out.

"The passengers are always grateful for being able to get out. It would be a shame if that was no longer the case."

Any volunteers should contact Mrs Black on 01243 264412.
