Passengers escape in bus fire drama

TOWN centre bus passengers had a dramatic escape when the vehicle they were travelling on caught fire late on Thursday morning.

A suspected engine fire left the cabin filled with smoke.

The driver pulled the vehicle over outside Bexhill Post Office. The handful of passengers on board were quickly moved off the bus before the fire could take hold.

Nobody was hurt.

An appliance from Bexhill Fire Station was on the scene within minutes to douse the flames and prevent the fire spreading to the passenger compartment.

The north end of Devonshire Road was still blocked at midday as emergency services planned how to move the bus, operated by Renown Coaches.

Driver Sue Nayler said: "We were coming through the town over a bump when I heard this 'pop'.

"Someone shouted 'smoke' because they were sitting near the back. I stopped and we got everybody off - it was very smooth and quick. Thank God it was because you could see the flames.

"It all happened so quickly."
