With the NHS under increasing pressure, Home Instead Chichester is stepping up its live-in care service to meet the growing home care needs of our ageing population and prevent so many older people requiring medical treatment this winter.

As concerns grow for a ‘twindemic’ – a severe flu season happening alongside a COVID wave – and a potential rise in hospital admissions, live-in care professionals will be able to spot any signs of bad health among older people in the community and address them early on. Home Instead hopes to help keep our ageing adults well and out of hospital.

Live-in care sees Home Instead’s care professionals move into an older person’s home and not just delivering care but offering much-needed company on a daily basis too. The live-in care professional lives with the client for a period of time, often two weeks, before switching with somebody else who takes over the role and then hands back the baton.

One of Home Instead Chichester’s live-in care professionals is Peter Rock who provides care for local lady Doris.

Speaking about the job, Peter said: “You get to really know the person you’re supporting. You get to know their background story, what they’ve been doing all their lives and how they’ve got to where they are now. You feel comfortable in your client’s presence, and likewise they feel comfortable in yours.

“I’m enjoying my time with Home Instead. It’s probably the best thing I’ve done. If you love your nearest and dearest enough to care for them, you can do it for anybody.”

Reflecting on the care she receives, Doris said: “It’s wonderful, I can’t beat my carers. They do everything. All the washing, cleaning, changing the beds, cooking, shopping… it’s perfect.”

To boost its live-in care capacity, Home Instead Chichester is looking to recruit live-in care professionals to support local older people in the area and help prevent a winter healthcare crisis. After a full training programme, new recruits will have the skills and knowledge to make a difference, just like Peter.
